I have a kegerator from 1964 it has been in the family for 3 generations now, it finally stopped getting cold I want to replace/refill the freaon but I'm not sure which of the new freons replacements to use, any help?
DON'T WANT TO BUY A NEW ONE BECAUSE IT IS THE ONLY THING GRANDPA EVER GAVE ME AND HE ACTUALLY CRIED WHEN IT LEFT. I WANT TO KEEP IT
Contact an appliance repair shop and tell them you need it recharged. It will be labeled with the proper refrigerant and they'll be able to either do it for you or send you to someone who can.
Chances are good, the refrigerant used is R-12 ("Freon" is just a brand name) but because R-12 is a chlorfluorocarbon and thus an ozone depleting agent, the place that does it has to be licensed to work with that type of refrigerant. You may have to do some digging to find a place that will be able to work with that refrigerant. The new, green refrigerants like R-134a (the closest equivalent to R-12) requires a number of modifications to retrofit an R-12 system, and something as old as 1964 may not be compatible…the only way to know for sure is to ask the repair shop.
